Chapter 11: Heart to Heart

ADELAIDE

Sometime in the middle of the night, there's a knock at my door. Or at least, I thought there was. Sleep has eluded me so far, and I have to decide if it was in my dreams or not, completely unsure whether or not I actually ever fully drifted into sleep. I scrub the sleep out of my eyes and shuffle to the door to investigate.

I get up and cross the room, opening the door slowly, at first, to make sure it's someone that I recognize. After the stranger outside, earlier, and his threats, I don't feel very confident. Although, I think I could probably take someone in a fight, at least for a little while. Until someone else heard me struggling.

Ciro is standing in the hallway, face barely visible in the dim light of the hallway. My eyes narrow as I tug the door open, letting him in.

"Can I help you?" I ask as he sinks into the chair in the corner of the room.

He reminds me of a gargoyle. He sits grimly in the corner, watchful and quiet.

"Just here to gawk, then?" I ask.

He lets one corner of his mouth tip up in a tiny smile. "Can you blame me? You're stunning."

"You must be drunk," I dismiss.

"I've been up all night, worried sick about you," he starts.

"How come?" I ask, genuinely surprised. There is a tangle of emotions attached to both his words and mine, and I'm not sure where we stand.

"I just kept thinking about what could have happened today. I sent you out there to clean that damn shed, and there was some lunatic sulking out there. Thank fuck that Alessandro was out there running security. I never would have forgiven myself if that man had laid a hand on you," he sighs.

" Don't lose any sleep worrying about me," I dismiss, waving him off. "If I've learned anything over the past few years, it's that life is unpredictable. You couldn't have done anything differently."

I lay back on my bed. It's comfortable now, breathing is easier. I don't know what changed, but he feels less of a threat than he did when I first got here.

"I've been losing sleep over you since I got here. I don't know why in the hell I'm telling you any of this, but you haunt my mind constantly. That scene in Wuthering Heights, when Heathcliff visits Catherine's grave? I feel like that. I feel like you're too far gone, separated by death from me, and it's my fault." Ciro sits back in his chair, studying me with an unreadable look.

"Is it embarrassing that I never read it?" I confess.

"I wouldn't expect you to have. It's not a beautiful love story. It's dark, and it's depressing, and it's doomed to begin with. I think that's why I keep picturing you as Catherine." Ciro still looks miserable.

"When did you get into the classics?" I ask, wanting to know more about him, and do anything to wipe the tragedy from his face.
